Why are the World’s Largest Dump Trucks Essential to Modern Infrastructure?

Ultra-class mining dump trucks are the heavy-duty engines of global development, responsible for hauling the raw materials that form the foundation of our urban lifestyle. By transporting massive volumes of oil sand, coal, and limestone, these mining giants provide the essential aggregates required to build the roads, infrastructure, and modern metropolises we inhabit today. This article examines the ten biggest dump trucks in the world, detailing the technical specifications and engineering features that allow these machines to perform under the grueling conditions of the heavy construction machinery industry.

The 10 Biggest Dump Trucks in the World

Here are the ten biggest dump trucks in the world, whose capabilities exceed the limits of what industrial vehicles can achieve:

1. Belaz 75710 Dump Truck

At number one, we have the BelAz 75710. Built in Belarus, the 840.5-ton dump truck sits comfortably on top of our list as the biggest dump truck in the world. It can haul material with a whopping payload capacity of 450 metric tons, on a body that can hold 268 cubic meters. It is powered by two 2,300-horsepower diesel engines, and can run at a top speed of 64 km/h. If you're wondering what it takes to own the biggest dump truck in the world, let's just say you need $6 to $8 million in the bank, minus shipping, handling, export, import, sales, and tax fees. The higher cost is not just the upfront price; however, this truck slurps up to 1,300 liters of fuel per 100 km, but hey, if you've got 8 million sitting in the bank, I don't think this'll affect your decision.

2. Caterpillar 798 Dump Truck

Introduced in 2018 by Caterpillar, the 798 mining dump truck stands out with a total weight of 624 metric tons and an empty weight of 231 tons. It can carry up to 372 tons of materials in its 276 cubic meter body. Powered by a robust 3,500-horsepower Caterpillar C175-16 diesel 16-cylinder engine, this truck measures 7.7 meters in height, 15.6 meters in length, and 9.2 meters in width. Equipped for endurance, its large fuel tank holds 7,571 liters of diesel, enabling it to operate efficiently throughout the day.

3. Caterpillar 797 Dump Truck

The 4,000-horsepower mining dump truck is Caterpillar's second biggest in their rigid dump truck lineup. It has a 363-ton capacity, making its total weight stand firmly at 623 metric tons. The manufacturer promises the lowest cost-per-ton in the 797 size class thanks to 25% lower maintenance costs, and 10% lower fuel consumption.

4. Komatsu 980 Dump Truck

The Komatsu 980E-5, introduced in 2019, ranks as the fourth-largest earth-moving dump truck globally, boasting a nominal payload capacity of 363 tons. As the successor to the 980E-4, this new generation model features an enhanced cab design, an improved drive system, and the upgraded satellite-based communication system, KOMTRAX Plus 2. Powered by an 18-cylinder Komatsu SSDA18V170 engine delivering 3500 horsepower, the truck reaches speeds of up to 64 km/h. With a body capacity of 250 cubic meters, it serves extensively in mining operations across North America and Australia.

This truck has an overall vehicle mass of 623 tons and a curb weight of 260 tons. It is equipped with a robust engine that produces 3,750 horsepower and delivers a maximum torque of 15,000 Nm, allowing the XDE400 to reach speeds up to 64 km/h, handle gradients up to 19%, and manage a minimal turning diameter of 32 meters.

6. Belaz 75604 Dump Truck

Part of the Belaz-7560 series, the BelAZ 75604 is one of four models designed to handle a consistent payload of 360 tons. While each model in the 7560 range (75602, 75603, 75604, and 75605) shares the same payload capacity, they vary in terms of engine power and drive configurations. The 75604 model is outfitted with a powerful 3750 hp engine and has a body capacity of 218 cubic meters. Its robust design is engineered to operate in extreme climatic conditions, ranging from -50 to +50 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for challenging environments like the icy Siberian desert.

7. Terex MT6300 Dump Truck

Introduced in 2008, the Terex MT6300AC was once the flagship model of Terex’s mining dump truck lineup. Following the sale of Terex’s mining division in 2011 to Bucyrus, and then subsequently to Caterpillar, this model was rebranded as the Terex/Bucyrus MT6300AC, then Unit Rig MT6300, respectively. The truck is equipped with a 3750 hp engine and offers a heaped body capacity of 230 cubic meters. It boasts a nominal gross vehicle weight of 603 tons and can achieve a maximum travel speed of 64 km/h.

8. Liebherr T284 Dump Truck

The Liebherr T 284, introduced in 2012, is part of the 363-ton class and serves as the successor to the popular T 282 C. It stands out with its class-leading MTU 20V4000 C22 engine, which delivers an impressive 4023 HP, making it the most powerful in its category. The truck’s nominal gross vehicle weight reaches 600 tons, and it can travel at speeds up to 64 km/h. Unlike standard models, the T 284 doesn’t have a fixed body capacity; instead, each body is customized to meet specific mining requirements. Efficiently compatible with the Liebherr R 9800—the largest hydraulic excavator from Liebherr—the T 284 can be fully loaded in just five passes. This model has been notably effective in mining operations throughout Central and South America.

9. Caterpillar 795 Dump Truck

Launched in 2009, the Caterpillar 795F AC stands out as the industry’s first single-sourced electric drive truck. This model offers a nominal payload of 338 tons and a heaped body capacity of 252 cubic meters. Powered by a 16-cylinder engine, it generates a gross power of 3400 HP and reaches speeds up to 64 km/h. Notably, Caterpillar has chosen not to make the 795F AC compliant with Tier 4 Final emissions standards, opting instead for Tier 2 readiness. As a result, its use is primarily in regions like Africa and South America, where the stricter emissions standards are not a requirement.
