The Majestic Al Majaz Island in Sharjah - A Feat of Construction

The Government of Sharjah's Directorate of Public Works awarded a challenging project of constructing Al Majaz Island on Khalid Lagoon to Al Marwan and a number of contractors. The construction of the edge wall, jogging track, connecting road, as well as the Roman-style amphitheater: Al Majaz Amphitheater, needed specialized equipment to complete the project. It took around 215 pieces of specialized construction machinery and 19 months to complete the project in full.

Marine Works by the Island

The edge wall of Al Majaz Island is a concrete block wall built along the periphery of the island. To construct this wall, Al Marwan utilized long-reach excavators such as the Komatsu PC1600 and PC850. These excavators provided the required reach and power to excavate and build the wall efficiently. Additionally, specialized crawler cranes such as the Kobelco 7250S and CKS1350 were used to lift and place the concrete blocks accurately.

Connecting Road Construction

The construction of the connecting road between Al Majaz Island and Al Majaz Waterfront required a range of specialized equipment. Al Marwan used a number of road building equipment such as JCB 3CX backhoes, and Kobelco SK220 excavators to excavate and later lay the foundation for the road using multiple Volvo and Vogele asphalt pavers. The road building phase of the project was finalized with building a rubber jogging track that extends around the edge of the island.

Al Majaz Amphitheater

The construction of the Roman-style amphitheater was the highlight of the project. The amphitheater's foundation required specialized equipment such as the Zeppelin ZR26 and ABI Mobilram TM 14-17SL piling rigs to drill deep into the ground and lay a strong foundation. The 7,238m² amphitheater accommodates over 4,000 visitors and is now one of the most iconic attractions in the emirate.

Al Marwan successfully completed the construction of Al Majaz Island on Khalid Lagoon on record time and within budget. The use of specialized equipment such as long-reach excavators, crawler cranes, and piling rigs played a vital role in completing the project efficiently and effectively. The result is a majestic Al Majaz Island that will serve as a landmark for the Emirate of Sharjah for years to come.
