How Was the Jebel Jais Road Built? The UAE’s Highest Mountain Project

Nestled within the rugged terrain of Ras Al Khaimah, Jebel Jais stands as the UAE’s highest peak above sea level. Transforming this craggy mountain into a world-class tourist destination was a monumental feat of engineering, undertaken by General Mechanic Company (GMC) in a strategic partnership with Al Marwan.

Conquering the 36-kilometer ascent required moving over 5.5 million cubic meters of rock and navigating extreme topographical challenges. To maintain momentum in an environment where a single breakdown could stall the entire project, GMC relied on Al Marwan’s specialized heavy construction equipment for rent. From excavator to asphalt paver, the machinery deployed was essential in carving a safe, scenic path through the clouds.

Project Overview

The project, commissioned by the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, involved the construction of a 36-kilometer road, ascending to the summit of Jebel Jais. Commencing in 2005 and reaching completion in 2017, this undertaking required the expertise of around 150 skilled operators who labored tirelessly to overcome the formidable obstacles presented by the mountainous terrain. In its early years, Al Marwan’s asphalt and road marking fleet came in to give the long and winding road its lasting finish.

Equipment Deployment

To tackle the demanding topography and ensure high-quality road construction, a wide array of cutting-edge equipment provided by Al Marwan was utilized. The deployment included Hamm and Sakai road rollers for rent, Dynapac pneumatic tire rollers for rent, Volvo and Hino tipper trucks for rent, Vogele and Volvo asphalt pavers for rent, and Bobcat skid steer loaders for rent. This robust fleet of machinery played a pivotal role in executing the meticulous layering process, involving a 15 cm sub base, 15 cm road base, and a double layer of asphalt.

Challenges and Triumphs

Spanning a period of 12 years, the project encountered various challenges, including adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, and extreme winds, which often caused rockfall on the newly laid roads. However, with the unwavering determination of the project team and meticulous engineering measures, these obstacles were successfully overcome. The completion of the road not only opened up accessibility for local quarries, villages, and private estates but also paved the way for Jebel Jais to emerge as a prominent tourist attraction in the region.

Jebel Jais: A Natural Haven

The completion of the asphalt and road marking project on Jebel Jais has had a transformative impact on the region. The enhanced road infrastructure facilitated safe and convenient travel for residents and tourists alike. Furthermore, the project's success led to the establishment of entertainment and hospitality hotspots, notably the world's longest zipline, the Jebel Jais Zipline, spanning a staggering 2.6 kilometers. The road's breathtaking scenery has also attracted auto manufacturers seeking picturesque backdrops to showcase their vehicles.

Beyond its infrastructural significance, Jebel Jais offers a respite from the scorching heat experienced elsewhere in the UAE. With temperatures approximately 10 degrees cooler at its summit, the mountain has become a refuge for those seeking solace amidst nature's grandeur. Families from across the region now flock to the mountain, relishing the opportunity to enjoy barbecues and explore its scenic trails.

The asphalt paver and road marking project on Jebel Jais stands as a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence in infrastructure development. Al Marwan's supply of high-quality heavy equipment proved instrumental in the project's success. Contact us today to unlock the full potential of your next venture.
