Sharjah’s Al Taawun Square Development Reaches 15-20% Completion

• Al Taawun Square Tunnel
• Al Khulafa Al Rashideen intersection
• Intersections perpendicular to the First Industrial Street
• Intersections perpendicular to the Second Industrial Street
• The intersection connected to the extension of the Third Industrial Street

These improvements form part of the wider development of the Al Taawun Square corridor towards Al Nahda Bridge and Dubai, alongside upgrades extending along Al Khan Street towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

Al Taawun Tunnel Takes Centre Stage

The Al Taawun Tunnel remains one of the most prominent elements of the project.

As we discussed in our previous article on Sharjah’s new road projects, the tunnel is being developed to create a more direct traffic connection towards Dubai through Al Nahda Bridge while reducing pressure on the existing Al Taawun junction. Diversion  associated with construction began in June 2026, and the first phase of  tunnel project is expected to be completed by November 2026, after which traffic can be partially redirected through the tunnel as work advances into subsequent phases. 

The project is ultimately about more than building another tunnel.

Its engineering solutions are designed to improve the movement of vehicles, increase road capacity and strengthen connections between residential and commercial districts and the main road network. The improvements should particularly benefit motorists travelling between Sharjah and Dubai during peak commuting periods. Sharjag RTA has indicated that once the project and surrounding roads are completed, waiting times at intersections could fall to around 40 seconds. That would make a noticeable difference on a corridor where congestion currently builds rapidly during morning and evening peaks.
