A smooth road does not start with the asphalt paver. It starts long before the mix reaches the site. From producing hot mix asphalt at the plant to hauling, spreading, grading, and compacting it into a finished surface, every stage depends on the right machinery working in the right sequence.
For contractors, understanding this heavy machinery chain is essential. If one machine is delayed, undersized, or not properly matched to the job, the entire paving operation can slow down. That is why successful road projects rely on a complete fleet, including dump trucks, pavers, bulldozers, drum rollers, road rollers, and compaction equipment.
At Al Marwan Machinery, contractors can find reliable machines for road construction, asphalt works, infrastructure projects, and equipment rental in Dubai and across the UAE.
The paving process starts at the asphalt plant, where aggregates, bitumen, filler, and additives are heated and mixed to produce hot mix asphalt. The mix must leave the plant at the right temperature and reach the site quickly enough to remain workable.
This is where planning begins. The project team must calculate the distance from the plant to the paving area, expected truck cycle times, road access, waiting space, and daily paving target. A high-output asphalt plant will not improve productivity if the site does not have enough hauling capacity or paving equipment ready to receive the material.
In short, asphalt quality depends not only on the mix design, but also on how efficiently the material is transported and placed.

Once the asphalt mix is ready, it is loaded into dump trucks or dumpers and transported to the paving site. These machines form the link between the asphalt plant and the road crew.
For large road projects, contractors often depend on heavy-duty dump trucks because they can move large volumes of asphalt in repeated cycles. For rough access roads, temporary construction routes, or earthmoving support near the paving area, an articulated dump truck such as the Volvo A40G can be useful. Al Marwan’s used Volvo A40G units are listed with 39,000 kg operating weight and 476 hp, making them suitable for demanding hauling work where traction, payload, and stability matter.
A dump truck for rent can be a practical option when the project needs extra hauling capacity for a limited period. Instead of delaying paving work due to material shortage, contractors can increase the number of trucks and keep the asphalt paver moving continuously.
Consistency is important. If trucks arrive too slowly, the paver may stop and create surface joints. If too many trucks arrive at once, asphalt can lose temperature while waiting. The right hauling plan keeps the paving train balanced.

Before asphalt is placed, the road base must be properly prepared. This includes clearing, spreading, leveling, shaping, and trimming the surface to the required profile. A weak or uneven base can affect the final road even if the asphalt layer is placed correctly.
Bulldozers are used in earlier stages of roadwork to push material, shape embankments, clear access routes, and support grading operations. For heavy site preparation, contractors may look for a bulldozer for rent to support temporary earthmoving requirements without committing to a long-term purchase.
Models such as the Caterpillar D8 dozer are commonly used in medium-to-large earthmoving tasks. Al Marwan’s crawler dozer listings highlight the CAT D8 as a roughly 40-ton class dozer available in conventional and LGP track configurations, giving contractors flexibility for different ground conditions.
While bulldozers do not place asphalt, they help create the working conditions that allow paving teams to perform accurately and safely.

The asphalt paver is the center of the paving operation. It receives hot mix asphalt from the truck, moves it through the conveyor system, spreads it across the required width, and levels it with the screed.
A good asphalt paver helps achieve consistent mat thickness, correct width, smooth texture, and controlled paving speed. The machine must be matched to the road type, paving width, layer thickness, and daily output.
For example, Al Marwan lists the Dynapac Redline DRF25-70C track paver, designed with a paving width of up to 9 meters and a working speed of 30 m/min. This makes it suitable for heavy-duty paving applications such as highways, large roads, industrial areas, and airport-related works. Al Marwan also lists the Volvo P5320B ABG track paver, with paving widths up to 4.75 meters for large paving projects.
In many projects, pavers must work continuously to avoid cold joints and surface inconsistencies. This means the hauling fleet, site crew, and compaction equipment must all be ready before paving begins.
After the asphalt is placed, compaction must begin quickly while the material is still hot. This stage is critical because asphalt loses workability as it cools. If compaction is delayed, achieving the required density becomes more difficult.
A drum roller is usually used for breakdown compaction directly behind the paver. The roller applies weight and vibration to remove air voids, improve density, and lock the asphalt particles together.
Al Marwan offers Dynapac Redline compaction equipment such as the DRS120D single drum roller and DRA90 double drum roller. The DRS120D is listed at 11,400 kg with a 2,130 mm Compaction Width, while the DRA90 double drum roller is listed at 9,600 kg with a 1,690 mm Compaction Width. These road roller options support different compaction requirements depending on the project size and asphalt layer.
The key is timing. Rollers must follow the paver closely, but not too aggressively. Operators need to control speed, vibration settings, overlap, and rolling pattern to avoid cracks, waves, or surface marks.

After initial compaction, the asphalt surface may require intermediate and finish rolling. This is where different types of compaction equipment come into play.
Pneumatic tire rollers, such as the Dynapac Redline DRT140 listed by Al Marwan, are useful for kneading action and even pressure distribution. This helps improve asphalt density and surface sealing. Double drum rollers are also used for finish rolling to remove marks and improve smoothness.
The final rolling stage gives the road its finished appearance. It helps correct small surface imperfections and ensures the asphalt mat meets project specifications before the road is opened to traffic.
For smaller repair works, parking areas, trenches, or tight spaces, compact rollers and light compaction machines may also be used. The right equipment depends on the road width, asphalt thickness, available space, and required compaction level.
Road paving is not about one machine. It is about a complete chain working together:
When this chain is properly planned, contractors can reduce delays, improve surface quality, control costs, and complete more work within the available time window.
This is especially important in the UAE, where road projects often operate under tight schedules, high traffic pressure, hot weather, and strict quality requirements. Having access to the right machines, spare parts, and technical support can make a major difference.
