If you’re sizing up cranes for a project, you’ll quickly run into two very different boom configurations: the lattice boom crawler crane and the Telescopic crane Boom. Both lift heavy loads but they shine in different environments, with different setup requirements, owning costs, and operational advantages.
At Al Marwan Machinery, we help contractors choose the right configuration for safety, productivity, and lifetime value. We are the official dealer for Kobelco crawler cranes in the GCC and Middle East. These are classic lattice boom machines known for efficiency on large, long-duration jobs and we also supply mobile cranes with telescopic booms for fast-moving works that demand rapid setup and mobility.
Below is your practical, deep-dive guide to both boom types: how they’re built, what they can (and cannot) do, and when to pick one over the other.
Lattice Boom crawler crane
A crane with a truss-style boom (laced steel sections) mounted on a crawler undercarriage. Boom length is built by pin-connecting sections; jib and luffing jib options extend reach and lift flexibility. Movement on site is via steel tracks with low ground pressure.

Telescopic crane Boom
A box-section boom that extends and retracts hydraulically within itself (like a telescope). Most commonly mounted on all-terrain or truck-mounted mobile cranes that drive on roads between jobs.
Lattice boom (crawler):
The structure delivers high strength with relatively low self-weight, so more of the crane’s capacity goes into lifting your load, not carrying its own boom.
Excellent at heavy picks at long radius, especially with luffing jib configurations.
Heavy, box-section steel with telescoping stages and hydraulic cylinders adds boom self-weight.
Superb for medium-to-heavy lifts at shorter to moderate radiuses with fast setup. For very long reaches, capacity tails off faster than lattice.
Bottom line: For sustained heavy lifts and long outreach, lattice wins on pure performance per ton of machine. For everyday mixed lifting with speed, telescopic excels.
Lattice boom (crawler):
Assembly required. Boom and jib arrive as separate sections, pinned together by a rigging crew with assist cranes. Mobilization uses multiple lowbeds for the upper, carbody, crawlers, counterweights, and boom/jib packages. Once assembled, the crane can crawl with a load (within chart limits), which is a big advantage on linear or spread-out sites.
Telescopic boom (mobile):
Rapid setup. Drive to site, deploy outriggers, extend the telescopic boom. Fewer trailers, less site disruption, minimal assist lifts. Road mobility means multiple jobs per day are feasible.
Bottom line: Need to get in, lift, and get out fast? Telescopic like Tadano GR250N-2 mobile crane. Planning a months-long heavy lift program with repetitive picks? Buy Kobelco crawler crane like the Kobelco CKS2500 crawler crane.
Lattice boom crawler cranes distribute weight over wide steel tracks for low ground bearing pressure, often essential on soft soils, marine works, or sites where matting options are limited. They can inch around with the hook loaded (per chart), positioning large components precisely.
Telescopic cranes rely on outriggers to stabilize the lift and concentrate loads into mats at four points. On very soft or uneven ground, extra planning and engineered mats are a must.
Bottom line: Challenging ground? Advantage lattice crawler.
Lattice crawlers are natural fits for duty-cycle tasks: clamshell, dragline, pile driving, diaphragm wall grabs, and luffing jib work. Their structure and drums are optimized for continuous operation.
Telescopics are outstanding taxi cranes: HVAC rooftop lifts, precast placement, steel erection, machinery moves, tower crane erection/dismantling any task that rewards quick setup, versatile reach, and road travel. While they can handle some duty-cycle jobs, they’re not purpose-built for continuous heavy cycle work.
Bottom line: For heavy, repetitive cycles and specialized lifting attachments, pick lattice. For diverse, short-duration lifts, pick telescopic.
Lattice booms are open-truss structures that reduce wind load compared to a solid surface. This can expand weather windows for certain picks (always follow the crane’s manual and site wind thresholds).
Telescopic booms present more surface area to wind. Wind speed limits and derations can bite sooner in exposed sites.
Bottom line: In windy, exposed locations, especially at height, the lattice often maintains an edge.
Lattice crawlers shine when a crane is staying put for weeks or months. The upfront assembly cost is spread across many lifts, and the resulting productivity can be unbeatable.
Telescopics minimize logistics for short jobs or when a crane must move between sites frequently.
Bottom line: Match the crane to the job rhythm: long-stay heavy work = lattice (Kobelco 7250S crawler crane is recommended); frequent moves and short durations = telescopic.

| Where They Excel | • Heavy infrastructure: bridges, viaducts, metro, power plants • Industrial plants: refineries, steel mills • Marine & offshore yards: modules, caissons, jetty works • Wind & energy: heavy components at radius • Civil foundations & duty cycle: piling, clamshell, grab work | • Urban & commercial: HVAC units, glass panels, steel beams, rooftop equipment • Industrial maintenance: plant interventions with tight windows • Event & utility work: quick setup, multiple stops in a day • Tower crane erection/dismantling, precast elements with frequent mobilizations |
| Key Configuration Options | • Main boom: pinned lattice sections, length tailored to lift plan • Fixed jib: adds tip height for lighter loads • Luffing jib: articulated two-boom system for high-reach in congested sites • Auxiliary sheaves & attachments: for multiple parts of line or special rigging | • Hydraulic telescoping boom: multiple sections extend quickly • Outriggers: provide stability and ground load distribution • Boom nose & fly jib: swing-away or fixed for added height/reach on lighter loads |
| Operational Advantages | • Travel with load (within chart): reposition big components without constant rigging changes • Low ground pressure: wide crawlers distribute weight • High capacity at long radius: especially with luffer | • Fast deployment: drive to site, minimal counterweight, extend boom • Compact setups: modern all-terrain cranes fit tight streets/courtyards • High utilization: same crane covers multiple jobs per day |
| Ownership & Maintenance Notes | • Boom sections store & travel efficiently; pin inspections straightforward • Optimized fuel use via modern engines/hydraulics; accessible service points reduce downtime • Strong resale value in active infrastructure markets | • Hydraulic/telescoping systems need scheduled inspection & lubrication; sensor diagnostics simplify this • Tire, axle, and road gear maintenance essential for daily travel • Low transport costs; crane often drives itself to the job |
| When to Choose | • Heavy, repetitive lifts staged for weeks • Need luffing jib flexibility to reach over obstacles • Soft ground or benefit from tracked mobility under load • Duty-cycle work (pile driving, grabs) • you want to buy crawler crane with tailored boom/jib mixes | • Short-duration, time-sensitive jobs • Multiple sites per week or day • Need versatility without assembling a lattice system |
