Scissor Lifts 101: A Practical Guide for Buyers

What Are Scissor Lifts?

Scissor lifts are a type of mobile elevated work platform (MEWP) designed to move workers and equipment vertically. Unlike other manlifts, which might use articulated arms or sinoboom telescopic booms lifts, sinoboom scissor lifts operate with a set of crisscrossing supports that elongate as the platform is raised, resembling the mechanism of scissors.

The primary advantage of these aerial platforms is their ability to provide a stable platform that can hold multiple workers and their tools, making them ideal for a wide range of tasks, from sign hanging to warehouse operation, and even for maintenance and ceiling construction. These lifts can reach heights typically between 6 and 18 meters, with varying platform sizes to accommodate different needs.

Common Types of Scissor Lifts

Electric Scissor Lifts:

A manlift powered by an electric motor, known for the quiet operation and zero emissions. These features make them ideal for indoor use, particularly in environments where noise and air quality are concerns, such as warehouses, shopping malls, and office buildings. For example, Sinoboom offers a range of scissor lifts in various heights and platform sizes, ensuring you have the right equipment for confined indoor spaces.

Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts:

These manlifts are specifically designed for outdoor use, equipped with heavy-duty tires, higher ground clearance, and powerful engines to navigate uneven and rugged terrains. These manlifts are perfect for construction sites, agricultural settings, and outdoor maintenance tasks.

Hydraulic Scissor Lifts:

These aerial platforms use hydraulic systems to raise and lower the platform, offering simplicity in operation and maintenance. This type of manlift can be used in both indoor and outdoor environments, particularly where precision and ease of use are required.

Pneumatic Scissor Lifts:

Pneumatic lifts are powered by air pressure, making them environmentally friendly as they do not require hydraulic fluid or fuel. While less common, these lifts are invaluable in specific settings where contamination from oil or fuel must be avoided, such as food processing plants and pharmaceutical facilities.

Scissor Lift Specifications

1. Platform Height and Working Height

Platform height and working height are closely related. Platform height refers to the actual max reach of the platform or the height of the platform from the ground, while the working height is the total height that workers can reach while standing on the platform, which is typically calculated by adding the average height of a worker (around 1.7 meters for males and 1.6 meters for females) to the platform height.

Platform height and working height are two essential specifications to consider when choosing a manlift for sale, as they determine how high operators can safely and efficiently perform tasks at elevated job sites.

2. Lift Capacity

Lift capacity, also known as load capacity, refers to the maximum weight the manlift can safely support on its platform. This includes the weight of the workers, their tools, and any materials being used. Lift capacities can vary significantly, typically ranging from 200 to 1,000 kg, with models exceeding this capacity depending on their size and type. Overloading a lift can lead to operational failures and accidents. However, for heavy-duty tasks, such as construction or industrial maintenance, where multiple workers and heavy tools are involved, a manlift with a higher capacity is essential.

4. Platform Size

The size of the platform is another important consideration. Platform size dictates how much space is available for workers and their tools. Larger platforms provide more room to move freely between places, and allow multiple workers or large equipment but smaller platforms might be more suitable for jobs in tight or confined spaces. Take the 1323RE manlift, boasting a 680 kg platform capacity, comfortably lifting up to seven operators. On the other hand, the nimble 0608ME all-electric scissor lift is built for tighter spaces, holding up to two operators with a 230 kg capacity.

5. Power Sources

  • Aerial platforms are typically powered by electricity, diesel, or hydraulics, each with its advantages.
  • Electric manlifts are known for their quiet operation and zero emissions, making them ideal for indoor use or in areas where noise and air quality must be controlled.
  • Diesel scissor lifts are more powerful and are better suited for outdoor environments where rugged terrain and higher lifting capacities are required.
  • Hydraulic scissor lifts are versatile and can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings.

6. Mobility and Terrain Capability

Rough terrain scissor lifts are equipped with features like heavy-duty tires, higher ground clearance, and enhanced traction to navigate uneven, rugged outdoor environments. These manlifts are essential for construction sites, agricultural fields, and other outdoor areas where smooth surfaces are rare. In contrast, electric manlifts are typically designed for indoor use, where the terrain is smooth, and tight maneuverability is required. Sinoboom’s rough terrain models are engineered to handle the toughest conditions, while some models offer four-wheel drive capabilities, providing even greater mobility and control on challenging terrain.
