What Does “Tier 4” Mean in Cat Heavy Machinery?

“Tier 4” refers to strict diesel engine emissions standards introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for non-road diesel engines, including construction equipment. These rules were designed to significantly reduce pollutants such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides from diesel engines.

Fuel Quality: A Critical Factor

Fuel quality is one of the most important points when comparing Tier 4 and non-tier Cat excavators.

Tier 4 engines generally require ultra-low sulfur diesel, often known as ULSD. They also need the correct engine oil specification, usually low-ash oil, to protect the aftertreatment system.
